Woods Breaks it Off with Stevie Williams Due to Infidelity

Steve “Stevie” Williams has seen taller days as he was fired from caddying Tiger Woods (6’1″), in a not so easy parting of the two tall men. While Woods was nursing his injuries Williams asked his longtime boss if he could caddy for Adam Scott (6’0″) while woods was recovering.  Hey, a guy has to make a living, right? Is this cheating in the unwritten caddie code of honor? Chime in please if you know.

Obviously to Woods this was tantamount to infidelity (it takes one to know one) and he told Williams so much when he fired him over the phone…nice.  According to those who know things like this, Tiger told Stevie that they needed to take a break.  At least it wasn’t the ‘it’s not you it’s me’ speech.

Williams and Woods had been together for 12 long years before the recent breakup. It was a shock for Williams to hear the words, but he knew that Woods had the right as a player to fire him. The two had a man-to-man talk to receive the closure they both needed. And Williams had great success with new links partner Adam Scott, as Scott won the WGC Invitational. My condolences to Tiger as he will be seeing the new couplet all over the news, as he will be searching for his new companion. Might be a bit of a commitment issue for Woods, as he has only had two caddies hired for a regular basis, but we don’t need to get into those issues (again).

Tallest Players at The Masters

This week marks the annual playing of The Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia.  It is one of the most prestigious events in golf and is also one of the most difficult to qualify for with approximately 100 spots going to a combination of professionals and amateurs who have met some very rigorous criteria to be invited to play the hallowed course.  Of course the field will be well represented by the tall crowd with about 30% of the players being over 6’ tall.  Robert Karlsson of Sweden is the tallest at 6’5” making Tiger Woods look a bit short at 6’1.”  Phil Michelson (6’3”) won last year and is a 3-time Masters Champion.  He won last weekend at the Shell Houston Open and I think he may be sporting another green jacket Sunday.  I can’t wait for the official start on Thursday.  Which Longshot shirt goes best with green?  Maybe the new Leadon Gingham

Tall and Fit Golfers Take Hold of the PGA

A new breed of golfer is leading the way on the greens – tall, lean and incredibly in shaped. Dustin Johnson (6’4”, 190lbs), Gary Woodland (6’1”, 195) and of course legendary Tiger Woods (6’2”) are long hitters profiled in today’s New York Times sports section. Johnson and Woodland are just a few of golfers on the circuit who have embraced athletic conditioning to increase power, finesse and confidence on the greens.

Woods is credited with starting this movement of “elite-level conditioning” following his bought with knee problems several years ago. Appearing ripped and shirtless on the cover of Vanity Fair, many marveled at the new physique wondering how the previously soft-looking Tiger transformed himself to a perfect da Vinci David state (we won’t  even get into Balco).

Basketball players are now taking to the greens and even Woods thinks the influx is  a major change for the sport. “We are finally going to get athletes, guys who can dunk, guys who could have played baseball, or could have played football at the D-I level.”  Woods playing challenges on a personal level aside, it will be interesting to see how he comes face to face with this new reality this weekend at the Palmer Invitational.
