The 6′ 1″ Tall Club

We at Longshot Apparel would like to give a little shout out to all those tall men standing 6′ 1″. If you’re in this club, here’s to you! You stand tall alongside well-dressed men like Channing Tatum,  Bradly Cooper, and Robert  Pattinson.
We appreciate the way these fellas are dressing. There’s nothing like a tall man in a bold, well fitting suit. We hope that all you 6′ 1″ tall club members are out there classing it up like these risk-taking tall men. I think my personal favorite is Bradly Cooper’s purple suit. It takes a real man to wear a color like that.

Also, we should note that two of these three 6′ 1″ tall club members have been deemed People Magazine‘s “Sexiest Man Alive”, Bradly Cooper in 2011 and Channing Tatum in 2012. So we at Longshot say, way to go 6′ 1″ club, you are making the world a more beautiful place one club member at a time. Other tall man clubs are falling woefully behind. For instance, sorry 6′ 3″ tall club, you’ve got John Mayer, and though we like his music, he could use some help on the fashion front. Come on, 6′ 3″ club, get it together. The 6′ 1″ club is really rocking out there. Although, the 6′ 7″ club is pretty high on the awesome ranking because they have James Cromwell, and we just LOVE him.

So, here’s to the gentlemen of the 6′ 1″ club, and here’s hoping the 6′ 3″ club can pull it together to make up for John. We love you all, but the 6′ 1″ club is just doing wonderful things these days.

Men’s Fashion Week In Milan: Tall Guys with a Lot of Makeup

. What caught my attention was dudes running around with little clips and foil papers in their hair. When I have those I the salon, I’m so not that cool. The prim and properly of all these Adonises can give fellas a complex over a whole lot of nothing in my book. Guys don’t need to be dewy and romantic. But handsome, styled, well-groomed and wearing proper-fitting clothing – for sure. Watch at your own peril but it will give you a good chuckled. In our Longshot Apparel opinion, stay classic, add a little personal flair and get shirts that fit you well. No amount of makeup can come close to achieving that!

Men in Black

Much has been written about the perfect white shirt.  No doubt, I appreciate a handsome man in dark selvage denim jeans and a crisp white button down shirt but truth be told it’s the tall guy wearing a classically designed black shirt with jeans that makes me melt.  We’re not talking Disco Deney Terrio polyester black; we’re talking a crisp, cotton black shirt with white buttons.  You see a black shirt says something about a guy—sharp, modern, confident and stylishly aware.  Some guys don’t know how to wear a black shirt, they interpret it as dressy, morose or waiter like, but a black cotton shirt can be thought of as an everyday color like blue or white.  The Longshot Apparel black cotton Lawson is the perfect casual black shirt—a go to staple for the tall man’s wardrobe.

Tips to Look Taller

It is a fact that most men wish they were taller. There are a lot of studies that show that tall guys are generally more successful, make more money, win the beautiful girls, etc… But alas, the average American male is only 5’9.”  What to do if you want to create the image of greater altitude to improve your attitude?  Here are a few tips I came across recently:

Tailor your clothes
An inch of extra fabric doesn’t sound like much of a problem on pants or a shirt, but a tiny inch can look very different on a guy who is six feet tall versus one who’s five foot seven. A perfect fit will keep your proportions in balance and your silhouette streamlined.

Stripes elongate your frame probably more than any other pattern. The trick is to make sure the stripes are proportioned to your frame size. A very wide stripe on a slender frame can actually make you look smaller. When it comes to plaids and checks, stick to smaller ones. Big patterns will swallow you up.

Avoid low rises
Trousers and jeans worn as close as possible to your natural waistline (without looking nerdy) will make your legs look longer. If you’re in the market for new pants, look for a regular rise and avoid low rises, which will make shorten the look of your legs.

Pick one color
Wearing a monochromatic outfit visually creates a longer line from shoulder to toe. Pinstripes can help stretch your shorter frame higher visually however, so you may want to consider this option.

Keep the bottom darker than the top
If you wear more than one color, make sure your pants are always darker than your shirt. Lighter colors worn on the bottom will shift the attention down to your feet and make your bottom half look shorter and heavier.

Skinny lapels flatter small frames.
If you have a broad chest (around size 44), you can wear a wider lapel. Anything size 40 or smaller should stick to thinner lapels. The moment your lapel is too big, then your shoulder looks too narrow. Conversely, a skinny lapel on a broad guy will make him look like a square block.tips to look taller

Keep the focus up
Bring attention up to your shoulders with a colorful pocket square or bowtie. Military details like epaulets bring the attention up, away from your feet.

Good advice.  Right on target on the perfect fit-we couldn’t agree more.  Of course tall and fit guys won’t have to tailor our shirts…Oh and another thing, never wear epaulets unless you are actually in the military!  Stand tall.

Where He Finds Fashion

Because the average male is vague about where his fashion influences come from we thought we would do our part by weeding out the style resources available to men these days.

Below is our list of where to turn for inspiration.

Esquire is an urban man’s mag.  Fashion perspective and images are reasonably macho with a fashion twist.  Specific articles talk turkey about how to create your own admirable style whether at work or hangin’ with your cronies. Advice covers the gamut  from fashion all the way to the shaving cream.  Online Esquire delivers daily with a  rockin’ style blog that doesn’t miss a beat with product reviews, style reports and how-to advice.

Rolling Stone is where the rock ‘n’ roller goes to get the latest news, music and celebrity gossip. The cover image is always fashionably styled usually highlighting a celebrity sometimes with clothes on and sometimes scantily clad. The classic-rock theme is evident in the fashion spreads hinting to the irreverantly cool.  While this isn’t a fashion magazine per se it is a harbinger of what fashions are on the horizon for a more mass audience.

Outside Magazine is all about the male, active lifestyle, outside.  Like Rolling Stone this magazine is not marketed as a fashion book, however, a guy can get fashion inspriation from their “gear” spreads.  Occasionally the magazine will chime in on fashion but it is usually shrouded in an adverture story of some sort.  That said if a guy is looking to look hot in the the latest running, biking, cycling, hiking attire they will find what’s on the runways at Nike, Adidas, Nau, The Northface and all the other usual suspects on the pages of OM.

GQ has always been the latest trend setter when it comes to men’s fashion. While in the past they have primarily geared their content to the fastidious metrosexual they have of late broadened their base with more coverage of stylish athetes.  Or maybe it’s just that athletes have become more stylish so they fit into the category? With articles on “coolest athlete of all time” and “best and worst dressed at the Espy’s,” GQ has a style for today’s fit man.  Also a great resource for the latest in pop culture.

Details There’s a lot of overlap here with GQ but the main difference in the two magaiznes is GQ is a little more grown up and astute on the political and cultural front.  Details usually has a great celebrity story tied into some fashion news. Their fashion stories are user friendly and straightforward .  It is an urban magazine for guys who are a bit younger, a bit hipper.  Written with a flip and cocky voice the fashion coverage is always on point.

Urban Daddy is also something a guy might be interested in visiting. It’s a blog about a guy’s lifestyle focused on what working dad’s, young and old, want to read about. Whether its fashion tips or where to travel to in the summer, it covers all the bases, even how to grill the best burger, with bacon.

Horrible Bosses, Great Fashion

Tall and standing fashionable: Now that’s what we like to see on the big screen.  Horrible Bosses cast chatted with GQ’s Devon Gordon and it got me thinking about a couple of things in regard to men’s fashion. The classic look that Jason Bateman (6’0”) pulls off is really clutch, I call it modern preppy.  Bateman’s character is not the only one sporting snappy togs these days. Men across the country are dressing better in the workplace, evidenced by the double digit growth in the men’s apparel market over the past year.  After nearly a decade of grunge meets of flip flops men are stepping up their game with more classic, traditional looks.  Which begs the question, are guys improving their fashion mojo to compete in the tight job market? We at Longshot Apparel say go for it–make a statement, be remembered and look good—that’s free advice for the budding career man.

The Perilous Pant

Mom and dad definitely put their foot down when I was a teenager, especially when it came to the ever so important foundational piece: jeans.  I was never allowed to wear jeans that were too tight, too low or too ripped. What has the fashion world come to in that this forbidden triangle is now all the rage on every celebrity all the way to the middle school playground?

Turns out, parental law may have been on to something because there is evidentiary support that skinny jeans are not only to be a hazard to your fashion (debatable, I know), but also to your health. In the article, ‘The Perils of Wearing Skinny Jeans’, Paulomi Patel finds that too tight of jeans, inferring the skinny ones, can cause numb legs, tingling thighs and Meralgia Parethetica. Basically, the truly skinny jeans took the compression shorts look a little too far as they are cutting off circulation. Maybe there just isn’t enough blood flow to the brain because of the skinny jeans so people can’t make rational fashion choices about them? (Kidding).

But don’t worry, you can still save yourself. “There is no long term damage caused and once the pressure is taken off, that tingly sensation will be gone as the nerve regenerates,” says Patel.

The skinny jean trend is really more for the lean and lanky body type. The jeans give a lengthened appearance to the legs to give a longer perception. Personally, I do not choose to wear skinny jeans because they just look better on long-legged, tall people and I have neither of those two characteristics so it would be a longshot for me to pull them off.

Just Say No To Fast Food Fashion

Commercials on TV advertise buying bulk.  Costco won’t let you out the door unless you buy a lifetime supply of something or other.  We have all seen the ‘buy two get 12 free sales pitches.’ But what’s the value of 12 of something if those 12 don’t last 12 months.

Dressing for success is hard when looking for quality and enduring style.  Rarer still is the coveted shirt or sweater that can be handed down to the next generation (remember your dad’s old alma mater vintage sweatshirt that resurfaced in your closet?)

Longshot Apparel is the antithesis of the ‘fast food’ clothing culture and produces timeless product with the highest quality fabrics available.  We also make our shirts in America where we employ the country’s most talented shirt makers and designers.   In our minds creating future hand-me-downs is a privilege and a priority.  Sure you may have to pay a bit more up-front but pound for pound Longshot Apparel shirts will outlast, out live and out perform any cheaply made brand that will likely end up as next year’s landfill or a glaringly bad “style” moment upon reflection.

But how do you decipher quality, exactly? Is it the fabric, stitching or where it’s made? Take a closer look at your product to ensure durability. Fabric, elasticity, trims and even buttons can be key indicators of how well something is made. In the Article  “How to Recognize High Quality Clothing,” Kassidy Emmerson gives great tips to test what you’re buying.  It is easy to find something that looks great, but it’s the timeless looking piece that withstands the test of time, that makes a purchase worth it. Fitting quality into a budget is a tricky thing to master. But as I always tell myself when making a quality over quantity judgment, it’s an investment for the future.

NBA Fashion Finals

It’s that time of the year when the seemingly eternal NBA season finally comes to a head.  This year we are getting a good matchup with the Miami Heat taking on the Dallas Mavericks.  After the off-season drama and LeBron James “taking his talents to South Beach” debacle, the completed power trio including Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh has delivered the team to the finals again.  The Mavs come in with the amazing talents of Dirk Nowitzki and a strong supporting cast of veterans like Jason Kidd and Jason Terry along with a very deep bench.

While I expect the games to be great, I am really looking forward to the post-game interviews to see what these tall guys will be wearing as they break down the highs and lows of their performance.  It is entertaining to see what these guys will actually wear (case in point: Allen Iverson’s bizarre blend of bling gangsta style).  On the other hand some look pretty sharp.  Knowing these guys are pretty much all taller than most of us, it is worth noting what they are up to.

I have put together a poll on our Facebook page for the NBA “fashion finals” pitting the best of the Heat and the Mavs against each other.  I am sure you have an opinion-let us know what it is!  Certainly these guys would look good in our new Leadon shirt…
