Tall High Fives of the Week

Longshot Apparel is proud to present five quick hitters for this week, highlighting the tall in the news.

1.)    NFL Lockout is over – So all our favorite tall quarterbacks are back to work and the anxiety is put to rest (Brett Favre (6’2”) still trying to get some of that spot light though). Matt Hasselbeck (6’4”) is done with the Seahawks, let the over-rated under-rated debate begin!

2.)     Amy Winehouse’s music moves to the tall end of the charts after her death.

3.)    Kevin Love (6’10”) goes pro with a bump, set and a spike into beach volleyball.

4.)    Tall temperatures hit Middle America. The one time of year Seattle takes a win in weather, Mariners not so much.

5.)    Tall pitcher Ervin Santana (6’2”) pitches a no-hitter for the braves and this might be a longshot, but quite possibly the worst call of the year to benefit the Braves.

No Mellow For This Year’s Yellow

Cadel Evans may not be the tallest cyclist (5’9”), but he’s definitely the tallest Australian to win the Tour de France as he is the first to bring home the final yellow jersey to his country. Great day to be an Aussie! Cadel held the runner up position in his last six attempts at the Tour, so it was a well deserved   triumph to stand a top of the podium for the 34 year old.  Tall brothers  from Luxembourg finished respectively 2nd and 3rd, giving Evans a long and well deserved push for the victory down the traditional Champs-Elysees. A Frenchman, Thomas Voeckler came in 4th, with Spain’s Alberto Contador, two time defending champion finishing up in fifth place. Also, it was a great day for the United States as they took home the team title for Garmin-Cervelo.

From July 2nd to July 24th, the 21 stages were full of some traitorous racing, full of crash and burns, mixed with emotional dropouts for many riders along the road. I cringe every time I see a rider lose their balance in anticipation of the worst. This year had a bizarre accident involving a French TV car that knocked two riders out and sending them home with painful injuries. Crashes are always going to happen, but rarely are vehicles usually the culprit.

The tour did what it was supposed to in that it was eventful and gave the world a new champion with Cadel Evans cheering Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi!

Morning Must-Have : The Tour De France iPad App

NBC TDF All Access AppWhat does guilt look like? Well over the past week it’s been the Tour de France All Access App for the iPad. Ever since last Friday, I’ve been sleeping in and watching the Tour de France from the comfort of my bed week. Up at 5:30? Flip open the tablet and instant race coverage. Why bother moving to the tele room when you can lay on your side or rest your precious screening device on a pillow.

This handy app that turns an iPad into cycling control central. You get all the standings broken down by individual, team, 25-and-under and more. It’s a perfect way to get a handle on who’s doing what, and not to mention keep up with the teams that change sponsors frequently.  The basic statistics app is free but for $4.99 you can get all access streaming of all stages live. There’s even course breakdowns and summary recaps really making this the most power packed app I’ve ever really used.

Tomorrow is Stage 21 which will be another glorious leg of this race. I’ll be up with the birds once again and within arms distance of my iPad and great coverage.

Top Ten Tall

Here at Longshot Apparel, we keep our eyes on who’s on top in the news and look up to the tall. This week we have ten tall features that made the cut:

1.)    Tall Author Erik Larson from Seattle, WA makes the New York Times Best Sellers for the second time with his book : In the Garden of Beasts, a great follow up to his earlier best seller Devil in the white city.

2.)    Yao Ming retires from China, leaving the team falling short for the next season.

3.)   A tall order for Boeing for American Airlines from tall man Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Jim Albaugh.

4.)   Lakers’ Ron Artest is trying out for stand-up comedy. I mean, Metta World Peace is trying out for stand-up comedy. This might be a longshot in the making.

5.)   Tall, but feeling small, Hope Solo gave us a great shot at the Women’s World Cup championship, but the team was defeated by Japan in a dramatic shootout on Sunday.

6.)   Darren Clarke wins British Open followed by 4 others also measuring above 6’1” on Sunday’s final day of the tournament.

7.)   Tall brothers from Luxembourg, Andy and Frank Schleck (both sizing up to 6’1”) fall a bit behind in the Tour de France this week as the final stage is five days away.

8.)   Michelle Obama will have a 5’10” strong presence in her reality TV debut on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

9.)   William (6’3”) & Kate (5’10”) officially move into their palace home. Tough life for this tall couple.

10.)  Double amputee Oscar Pistorius qualifies for the track & field world championships in the 400 meter dash with a personal best. Pistorius stands a little over 6’1.”

NBA Player Nick Collison and NBA Analyst Ric Bucher are Longshot Apparel Fans

Nick Collison

Ric Bucher in the Longshot Apparel Lawson
Naturally Longshot Apparel is a huge fan of the NBA.  That’s why when we heard that tall, svelte Nick Collison of the Oklahoma City Thunder (6’10″) and NBA analyst and stylin’ man Ric Bucher (6’4″) are fans of Longshot Apparel we were flattered.  Tired of ready-to-wear apparel that didn’t fit both Nick and Ric were glad to see a brand that addressed the tall, fit guy opposed to the “big and tall guy.”  It’s good to be loved.  Both Nick and Ric have agreed to give us input on our product style and fit.  Stay tuned for the Collison and Bucher shirts.  Stand Tall!

The British Open Goes to the Tall Man

We at Longshot Apparel are glad to report that The British Open came out tall and American this year, two things that are close to our hearts. The top five contenders for the victory stand 6’1” and taller, and three were American.  Irishman Darren Clarke standing tall at 6’2” took home the Claret Jug and whopping $1,405,078, (he had been waiting for the victory for 20 long years). Following behind Clarke was American Phil Mickelson (6’3), American Dustin Johnson (6’4”), Dane Thomas Bjorn (6’2”) and American Chad Campbell (6’1”).  No slouches in that bunch.

Mickelson took runner-up again, for the seventh year in a row, but still played his unpredictable nature to bring the game close.  Mickelson and Johnson still cashed a check for $689,737. Johnson had a double-bogey shot that might have cost him the tournament, but coming next to Mickelson isn’t something to be too upset about. Bjorn won the first round lead, and took fourth this year to cash the check at $419,416. Not too shabby. Lastly, but not least, Campbell has a personal best finish in the fifth spot and has shown continuous improvement in recent years. Campbell shared fifth place with shorter Anthony Kim (5’10”) and Rickie Fowler (5’9”), all taking home checks of $293,105.

These winners beg the question: Is golf, like tennis getting taller?  Think about it though, being taller would give an advantage in strong winds, wider swing and maybe uneven ground to cover. But I’m not sure if height matters over the mind games on the putting green, other than the subconscious confidence height can bring. The clubs need to be fitted specially for the tall; otherwise things could get a bit messy on the driving range. This year, the height definitely brought confidence and cash, as well as triumph to our top five winners.

If Golf is getting taller, maybe Mickelson will stretch to victory, who is predicted to be nine feet tall by age 70.

Three Reasons GQ’s 40 Worst-Dressed Cities in America is Lame

Philly

GQ why did you do this to us? There’s fashion victims, but what about the victims who suffered through your recent blog post on The 40 Worst-Dressed Cities in America? Over the past week your review of the worst-dressed cities has been plastered everywhere from facebook posts of friends in Boulder and Boston to local news shows dying for feature filler. Granted there is a satirical bent to this posting as stated up front, but at some point (maybe city #25) satire gave way to gratuitous generalizations of how men dress. Why insult us with the obvious?

Here’s three reasons why GQ’s 40 Worst-Dressed cities in America is, well, lame:

1. 40 Cities is Ridiculous

Why not just name all the cities in almost every major market? It would have fell into your strategy to get every pathetic local newsroom to pick up this hard-edged story. Maybe you weren’t going for credibility just volume for everyone to spend time on your website to see if “they” were in the mix. A Top 10 or 20 would have been appreciated and would’ve kept your post from looking like a dumping (and dumbing) ground.

2. Football Fans & Tourists: Should they count?

Pittsburgh

Yes, a lot of men dress this way but tailgating and Disney world vacation pictures are hardly fashion for many communities. Yes, men can dress like slobs. And fans get crazy and tourists can be tasteless. Maybe you should just make fun of blue-collar workers instead. And many of those people would never be caught dead reading GQ for the very reason that you make fun of them. It’s so cool to use stereotypes for articles – it’s awesome to support all Americans as dumb-ass loud mouth types.

3. Using Pictures of Movies, TV Shows and Celebs is Lazy

Billy Ray Cyrus = Nashville

The Hangover, Saturday Night Live, Jersey Shore, Ron Burgundy, Billy Ray Cyrus from the eighties, Portland from the nineties and that dude from Good Fellas? Funny to look at but thought your local market correspondents might be a little more entrenched in the city they were writing about. Is it bad for us to expect more from you?

Okay, L.A. is funny

We like to laugh and you can laugh at us for being revved up enough to write about your post (and you will) but we come to you for a fresh perspective on style and unique content, not something the cat dragged in from a staff meeting.
